They have served proudly in all capacities in our war against terrorism. They continue to fight in the mountains of Afghanistan and they have done a superb job of ending the oppression in Iraq during the Gulf War of 2003. The members of the Washtenaw County Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 310 sponsored 5 'Support Our Troops' rallies around the county. These rallies gave Veterans, family members and others the opportunity to show their support of our troops. When war seemed eminent, the decision was made to hold a rally the first Saturday after the war began and each Saturday after that, until the war was over. Thankfully, only five rallies were needed. The fifth and last being a celebration of "Mission Accomplished - The Evil Regime Removed." The people of Southeast Michigan contributed thousands of donated items, which were shipped to our Troops. Over 100 boxes, totaling nearly 750 pounds were shipped to our military men and women in the Gulf. Three specially created Support banners, signed by people who attended rallies were included in the shipments. Over 1,000 hand written letters and cards to service men & women were written and shipped in the boxes for general distribution so our Troops would have personal mail from home. In addition, $1,000 was donated to the 101st Airborne's Eagle Family Support Group to help the families of young enlisted men with bills and food while their loved one was fighting our battle against terrorism. When Gold Star mother Mrs. Della McIntire, whose son Walter was killed in Vietnam, was asked to take part in one of the Support rallies, she cried and said that she would be very honored. She said it is too bad there were no Support rallies during the Vietnam War for us to attend. The motto of the Vietnam Veterans of America is: "Never again shall a vet coming home from battle be made to feel alone and unappreciated." We are proud to be Americans. We cherish our freedoms. We are grateful for the valiant efforts of those who work to keep us free and honored to be able to show support for them and their families. Thank you. |
